Welcome to our website!

Your son or daughter has just become a Bruin and you undoubtedly have a million questions about the campus and its services. Let us tell you a little about The Center for Women and Men and how we can be of assistance to your young adult.

The Center began in 1972 and has provided continuous service since that time in the area of gender related consultation, workshops and events. So what does that mean? We specialize in relationships and particularly in developing dating and social interaction skills. We know that it is hard for students (many of whom are away from home for the first time) to overcome their homesickness, make friends, and develop intimate relationships safely and at their own pace. We created a program called Project Date Smart just for that reason. Project Date Smart is designed to help your son or daughter build successful relationships, and enhance their personal wellbeing and safety. As we often say: "When you improve your relationships, you improve your life." We focus not only on intimate relationships, but also on relationships with friends, family, employers, teachers and others.

Here is a sample of the types of workshops your new student may wish to take:

  • Saying What's on Your Mind: Being Your Most Genuine Self
  • What to Say After You Say Hello
  • How to Break Up and Move On
  • Handling Day to Day Conflict
  • Dealing With Anger & Diffusing it in Others

We also offer workshops on self-esteem and confidence building. We know that many of our new students are either shy or just not yet comfortable in their new setting.

We know that as a parent the safety of your son or daughter is of primary concern to you. We here at UCLA take this responsibility very seriously as well. The Center for Women and Men provides free self defense workshops as well as teaching communication skills within intimate or dating situations to help our students to stay safe. We also have prevention training and individual crisis counseling in the areas of rape, partner abuse, and sexual harassment.

We know that this is a big campus and that it can feel impersonal for many students in the beginning. The Center for Women and Men is a good place for your son or daughter to come if they are experiencing difficulty or just have questions. Our staff knows the campus well and can refer them to the right person or office to resolve whatever their need is. So feel free to suggest that they come by the Center in B44 Student Activities Center to check out the office. In addition to offering approximately forty workshops per quarter, we also have drop in consultation and referrals for students during business hours:
Monday - Thursday 8:00 -5:00 and Friday from 9:00 -5:00.
